Prepare For A Job Loss

Nobody likes the idea of losing their job, and it is true that an income loss can disrupt your life in a variety of ways. Beyond the loss of income and the risk of getting behind on utility bills, mortgage payments, and a variety of other obligations, you risk losing a network of emotional support and business contacts.

Prepare For Unemployment Anyway!

You prepare for the that chance you may wreck your car with good car insurance, and when you do ding up the family vehicle, you are probably glad you did. So why wouldn’t you consider the chance, especially in these uncertain times, that you could lose your income?

Do You Save For a Rainy Day?

Of course, savings that can pay bills for 4 - 6 months are great! If you can afford your life, even without an income, you will be in a better position to look for another great opportunity. You may also be qualified for state unemployment benefits, and they will help some, though you probably won’t be able to collect an amount that is close to your current salary.

Private Unemployment Plans

You can also find layoff protection plans that provide cash benefits for unemployed people. The rules to qualify are very similar to those for state unemployment benefits, but the private cash payment is over and above any other money you collect.  A mortgage unemployment plan can protect your family against the most common reason for mortgage defaults, and that is a loss of income!

Protect Your Network

Also think about the friends and business contacts you have at your job. If you are locked out of your office and computer system, can you still contact them? Is there information that belongs to you that is stored at work, and that information could be technical books, business contact lists, or even the emails or your best buddies, so be sure to get a copy saved at home!
